Tuesday, Feb 11th Presenter:  Chuck Cowdery

TITLE:  Intro to Bourbon and American Whiskey; American 101

TASTING:

1.  Knob Creek

2.  Bulleit

3.  W.L. Weller Special Reserve

4.  Rittenhouse Rye

5.  Koval Single Grain Rye

DESCRIPTION:  As evidenced by the title, this course will focus on the basics of Whiskey tasting, terminology and production.  101 is an opportunity to explore whiskey styles from different distilleries while experiencing some of their varying flavor profiles.  We’ll also be discussing mash-bills, age statements and the craft distilling movement.

TITLE: The Whiskeys of Heaven Hill

TASTING:

  1. Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon Whiskey (current year)
  2. Larceny Bourbon Whiskey
  3. Rittenhouse Rye BIB Rye Whiskey
  4. Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey

DESCRIPTION: Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky, is the 3rd largest producer of American whiskey and the best place to taste the diversity of the American style. Each whiskey in this flight has a distinctively-different mash bill. Included are rye-recipe and wheated bourbons, straight rye, and the only straight wheat whiskey from a major producer. What they all have in common is the new, charred oak barrel.

TITLE: The Whiskeys of Wild Turkey

TASTING:

  1. Wild Turkey Bourbon 101
  2. Russell’s Reserve Bourbon
  3. Wild Turkey Rye
  4. Russell’s Reserve Rye

DESCRIPTION: Although everyone knows the Wild Turkey name, they’re relatively small. Campari, the owner since 2009, would like to make them a little bigger. The bourbon and rye sold under the Wild Turkey name are proudly old-fashioned. The Russell’s Reserve versions, while from the same basic whiskey stock, strive to match more modern tastes. It’s all made by the father-son distiller team of Jimmy and Eddie Russell.

DESCRIPTION:  Taste the flavors of Ireland and learn some of the complex history behind the island’s whiskey scene.  Home to some of the most popular whiskies worldwide, Ireland also produces a wide range produced at a relatively small amount of distilleries.  Prepare for St. Patrick’s day properly.
